Temporary Road Closures and Adjustments for Solar Eclipse Viewing in Elgin County

Central Elgin, ON – With the solar eclipse fast approaching on Monday, April 8th, Elgin County is implementing temporary traffic adjustments to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of residents and visitors during this extraordinary celestial event.

In Port Stanley, the following traffic adjustments will be in effect:

  • Warren Street: Closed.
  • Lift Bridge: Down from 12pm to 6pm.
  • Bridge Street: Westbound traffic only; eastbound lanes closed.
  • Sparta Line: Closed west of Sunset Road and north of Union Road.
  • Dexter Line: Closed at East Street and west of Fairview Road.
  • Hawkes Cliffe Road: Closed south of Dexter Line.
  • Access to East Road: Restricted to emergency vehicles only.

In Port Bruce, the following roads will be closed:

  • Dexter Line west of Imperial Road
  • Old Dexter Line (gravel area)
  • The following dead end roads south of Nova Scotia Line will be closed to traffic:
    • Pede Road
    • Jones Road
    • Springfield Road
    • Granger Road
    • Richmond Road

In Port Burwell, the following roads will be closed:

  • Chatham Street and Addison Street at Nova Scotia Line
  • Chatham Street at Bridge Street
  • Robinson Street and Wellington Street
  • Lakeshore Line east of Clarke Road
  • Stafford Road and Godby Line south of Glen Erie Line
  • County Road 55 at Lakeshore Line

In Port Glasgow, the following roads will be closed:

  • Gray Line Road east of Furnival Road and west of Havens Lake Road
  • Furnival Road south of Gray Line
  • Erie Road, Little John Line, Plumb Point Road, Bradt Road, Grandview Road (south of Lakeview Line)

Traffic Advisory and Eclipse Viewing:

Residents and visitors are urged to plan their travel routes accordingly and adhere to the traffic directives in place. While these closures are in effect, access will be maintained for local traffic and residents residing on the affected roads.

Eclipse Viewing Recommendations:

For those planning to view the solar eclipse, maximize your experience with contingency plans. Don’t just stop at Plan A – consider a Plan B and Plan C too, in case your preferred viewing area gets crowded. Explore numerous viewing options throughout Elgin County and check out businesses hosting eclipse events. Research your options and plan ahead for an unforgettable experience!

Graphic to indicate holiday closures at Elgin County Facilities. The Elgin County Administration Building, Provincial Offences Administration Building, and Elgin County Heritage Centre will be closed on Friday, December 23rd at noon. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024.
