1846
August - the first meeting regarding separation is held.
1847
Petition is sent to parliament with 3000 signatures in favour of separation from Middlesex / London District. Request is denied.
1848
Land for Courthouse and Gaol is given by Benjamin Drake to the Crown.
1849
Petition sent to Parliament for separation; petition is defeated.
1850
The Division of Counties Act abolished Districts. London District becomes Middlesex County. A third petition is sent and defeated. A fourth petition is sent and is successful.
1851
14 & 15 Vic. C.5, 2 August 1851, Elgin County may separate from Middlesex County when a Courthouse and Gaol are erected.
1852

Territorial Alterations Act establishes Elgin as a “junior” county, to Middlesex.

15 April – The first meeting of the Provisional County of Elgin Council is held in the St. Thomas town hall.

Elisha Ganson is elected the first Warden. St. Thomas is chosen as the County town. A clerk and treasurer are chosen. Plans are discussed to build a courthouse and gaol.

13 July – Cornerstone for the courthouse is laid.

22 July - Thomas Locker becomes Warden of the Provisional County.

1853

30 September – Proclamation issued formally dissolving the Union of the Counties of Elgin and Middlesex.

8 November – First session of “The Municipal Council of the County of Elgin” is held. William McKay is appointed clerk.

1854
1 January – Official date of separation between the Counties of Elgin and Middlesex.
