The addition will double the accommodation of the jail, and will include a special detention cell for unruly prisoners, as well as office space. The addition is being made to the east of the present jail and was designed by G. Duncan Black, St. Thomas consulting engineer."

Jail Wall RemovedC8 Sh4 B3 F6 4

"That's Where the Jail Wall Used To Be- Keith Player, project foreman for the County of Elgin, points towards where the wall separating the male and female exercise yards at the County jail used to be. The two-foot-thick wall was levelled by County workers who are creating a parking lot for County officials at the site of the 104-year-old jail. Mr. Player said there should be room for about 20 cars when the lot is completed. Elgin County Council had originally intended to tear down the outer jail walls as well, but settled for the centre wall when several groups protested the proposed demolition of the historic site."
