Time Capsule - 2014

To commemorate the restoration and expansion of the Courthouse, a new time capsule was been created.

The St. Thomas Consolidated Courthouse Time Capsule Committee members included: Brian Masschaele (County of Elgin, Chair), Wendell Graves (City of St. Thomas), Michael Baker (Curator, Elgin Time Capsule 2014County Museum), Carol Bradley (Ministry of the Attorney General, St. Thomas), Melissa Kirby (Ministry of the Attorney General, St. Thomas), Frank Dieterman (Infrastructure Ontario), Mike Lang (EllisDon Corporation) and Steve Peters (citizen appointee, former MPP).

The Committee existed to recommend to the Province of Ontario an appropriate time capsule container as well as a selection of contents representative of the identified partners on the redevelopment of the Elgin County Courthouse. These partners include the Province of Ontario, City of St. Thomas, County of Elgin, Elgin County justice community and the builder, EllisDon.

The stainless steel canister measures 12" high (with threaded lid) and 6" in diameter. The interior allows for objects no wider than 5 1/2". EllisDon worked with a local fabricator to produce the provided time capsule. The capsule was created according to specifications provided by the Canadian Conservation Institute.

In addition, the capsule was created as a cylinder to ensure that it fit in the same location as the first capsule.

The time capsule will be opened in 2102, to commemorate 250 years since the creation of the first capsule.

The inscription on the capsule reads:

EllisDon

This Time capsule was contributed by EllisDon Corporation, the builders of the Expanded Elgin County Courthouse. Fabricated in the year 2013 on behalf of the Elgin County Courthouse Time Capsule Committee.

Placed on March 18th, 2014.

To be opened in the year 2102.
