The Springfield Public Library joined the Elgin County Library System in 1940 and remained a member when the system turned into the Elgin County Library Co-operative in 1947.

For many years, the Springfield library was located in a room upstairs in the Springfield Municipal Building. When the Village Council decided to tear down the municipal building and rebuild a new one in 1949, the library was moved to a room in the back of the Post Office provided by Ted Rule. In 1950, the library moved into the newly built Springfield Municipal building. The Springfield Public Library became the Springfield branch of Elgin County Library in 1966.

The Springfield branch was one of the first to get internet and held an openhouse in October 1996. In 2010, the new Springfield branch is currently under construction and the library plans to be in the new building by the summer of 2010.
