Dutton

Although originally established in 1892, the Dutton Library joined the Elgin County Library Association in 1940.  The library was run by the Dutton Public Library Board until 1966 when it officially became the Dutton branch of the Elgin County Library.

Dutton library was located in Memorial Hall from 1923-1987.    After more than 60 years in Memorial Hall, the library was in desperate need for a new, larger facility.  On March 2, 1987, the Dutton Public Library moved to a newly renovated location at 231 Main Street.  The official opening ceremony was held October 24, 1987.

Eventually, the Village of Dutton and the Township of Dutton jointly sponsored the construction of a new 5,000 square-foot building which would serve as the West-Elgin service hub of the Elgin County Library System.  The Dutton-Dunwich Reference Library officially opened at 236 Shackleton Street on October 23, 1993.  Ten years later, on October 15, 2003, the library was renamed the John Kenneth Galbraith Reference Library – Dutton Branch.
