Vienna

The Vienna Public Library was formed in 1950 and immediately joined the Elgin County Library Co-Operative.  The library was first located in the old Vienna school building and was staffed by high school teachers.

In 1956 the new Vienna Public School was opened adjacent to the old school building, and the library relocated to a corner of the teachers' room.  The library closed in 1957 but re-opened the following year.

The Vienna Public Library Board administered the library until January 1, 1966 when it officially became the Vienna branch of the Elgin County Library.  On April 15, 1966 the library relocated to the old Vienna Town Hall.

In 1972, Vienna was the location of an experimental initiative of the Elgin County Library, becoming the system's first "Paperback Branch."   At this time, the collection was re-organized to include only paperback books.

On May 1, 2009, the Vienna Branch was closed to the public due to relatively low circulation and patron numbers, proximity to other branches, irresolvable structural problems with the building, and to reduce costs to the County and the Municipality of Bayham during challenging economic circumstances.
