Village of Sparta Reconstruction
The County of Elgin in partnership with the Municipality of Central Elgin is undertaking the reconstruction of Sparta Line from a distance of approximately 500 m west of Hiram Smith Line to Quaker Road, and along Quaker Road from Sparta Line to approximately 75 m south of South Street.
The project implements a “Complete Streets” philosophy to accommodate users of all transportation modes and abilities. For Sparta Line, the roadway will have pedestrian friendly spaces, while Quaker Road will also be accommodated with future on-street cyclist facilities in accordance with the Elgin-St. Thomas Cycling Master Plan. Both roadways will remain a two-lane cross section. Subtle and strategically placed curb extensions will be installed to provide protective shelter for resident and visitor on-street parking, improved integrated pedestrian connectivity, and represents a traffic calming measure drastically improving traffic safety and flow along this vital transportation corridor.
The project will include replacement of stormwater sewers, road, sidewalk, and the installation of new standalone decorative street lighting.
The Village of Sparta Reconstruction project will be completed in several phases:
- Phase 1 – Sparta Line construction from the westerly settlement limits to Quaker Road
- Phase 2 – Quaker Road construction from Sparta Line to the southerly settlement limit
A tailored construction detour for each phase will be in place throughout the duration of the project. During construction, sections of the roads will need to be closed to vehicular through traffic to complete the work safely and in a timely manner, however pederstrian access will be provided to the extent possible.
