Vol. 2 The second volume of the Yarmouth Glen Tweedsmuir started in 1959 and ends in 2012, and is a time capsule of technology. From black and white to colour photographs, and typewriter to home computer, this volume shows the changes of the last fifty years all in one volume. A variety of topics are covered, including branch history, barn histories, travels of Yarmouth Glen members and their outreach activities in the community. An index is included at the end of the volume. However the page numbers correspond to the written numbers, not the digitized page number. |

CENTRAL YARMOUTH As many Institute branches did, this group had its origins in Red Cross work during the war years. Central Yarmouth’s first meeting as an official Women’s Institute was on Sept. 1, 1948. The territory covered by this branch was from Highway #3 south to the Union Road and across the width of Yarmouth Township. |

NORTH YARMOUTH Formed on Oct. 17, 1930, branch territory covers the north-west corner of Yarmouth from Highway #3 to the Elgin/Middlesex county line. The branch produced one Tweedsmuir book and was disbanded Mar. 31, 2006. We are pleased to have two versions of North Yarmouth’s book. The original volume was re-worked with a more consistent type-face and with the addition of several more articles and photographs. While only the second version is presented on-line, both books are available for viewing at the Elgin County Archives to those interested in the process. Highlights include a history and photographs of the St. Thomas Waterworks, area and family histories, and early photos of the village of Yarmouth Centre. |

SOUTH YARMOUTH On May 27, 1920, after spending the war years raising funds for the Memorial Hospital and other causes, the South Yarmouth Patriotic Society became the South Yarmouth Women’s Institute. While much of the information in these volumes deals with the village of Union, there are many other items about the south end of Yarmouth Township. This branch was disbanded in 1984. |

SPARTA SOROSIS A Women’s Institute branch was first formed in Sparta in 1907 but lasted only 1 or 2 years. In the early 1920’s, the women of the Coles School Section formed a community service group named Sparta Sorosis (sorosis is Latin for sisterhood). On March 13, 1930, Sparta Sorosis formally became a branch of the Women’s Institute. The branch was disbanded on June 28, 2004. The branch produced two volumes that are each a rich and fascinating mix of vintage photographs and articles about the history of this vibrant community. |

PORT STANLEY The Port Stanley Women's Instutite was organized on May 28, 1929. Only one Tweedsmuir History is known to exist and it was compiled by Miss Agnes Hepburn, Tweedsmuir Curator (1929-1957). As Curator, Miss Hepburn sought out images from the late nineteenth century to illustrate the varied activities of this port town. From the popular beach and holiday destination to the shipping and fishing industry, the Port Stanley Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History represents the activities that were once daily occurances. |
