Honouring Heroes: Elgin County Heritage Centre Hosts13th Annual Vimy Lecture

Elgin County, ON – The Elgin County Heritage Centre is proud to present the 13th Annual Vimy Lecture, an evening dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of local soldiers and preserving the stories of the past. Taking place on April 9th at 7:00 PM, this year’s lecture, Elgin County and the First World War, will be delivered by renowned historian and President of the Elgin Historical Society, Pete Sheridan.
Sheridan will explore the impact of the First World War on Elgin County, from the challenges faced on the home front to the bravery of the men who served overseas. Among the stories shared will be that of Lance-Sergeant Ellis Wellwood Sifton, an Elgin County native whose extraordinary courage at the Battle of Vimy Ridge earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour of its time.
The Museum’s Vimy Lecture is an annual tradition, held on the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This year’s event is particularly special, as Sifton’s actual Victoria Cross will be on display for attendees to view—a rare and powerful opportunity to connect with history.
Elgin County Warden Grant Jones also emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Vimy Ridge holds a special place in our nation’s history, and it is vital that we continue to share the stories of those who served. The sacrifices made by the brave men and women from Elgin County helped shape the freedoms we enjoy today. This lecture is an opportunity for our community to come together in remembrance and gratitude. Events like the Vimy Lecture ensure that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
Join us as we honour Ellis Wellwood Sifton and all Canadians who served in the Great War, particularly those who fought at Vimy Ridge. Let us remember, reflect, and keep their legacy alive.
