Elgin County Library and Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners Launch New Healthy Brain Kits for Adults and Care Partners
County of Elgin, ON – Elgin County Library (ECL), in partnership with the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners, is pleased to announce the launch of ten new kits to support brain health. This pilot project aims to bring resources and activities to those in our community living with dementia, their care partners, and any adult interested in brain and memory health.
Healthy Brain Kits give users the opportunity to engage in activities designed to evoke memories, create connections, and provide a sense of accomplishment. The Kits can be used individually, or with assistance if needed, and they make for great inter-generational activities. Healthy Brain Kits can be borrowed for four weeks with an Elgin County Library card.
The Healthy Brain Kits have been developed to circulate throughout Elgin County Library branches. These kits have been bundled to represent five different stages of brain health to help meet the needs of individuals with different abilities and strengths—from someone living with late-stage dementia to someone with a recent dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) diagnosis, to someone with no cognitive impairment but with an interest in brain health. Check out individual kits for each level; there are two kits available to be borrowed for each level.
Healthy Brain Kit 1 has been designed for any adult who wants to work on their brain health.
Healthy Brain Kits 2 – 5 include activities for people living with dementia and their care partners. Each kit has been tailored with ability-specific activities and strengths.
“We are pleased to partner with Elgin County Library on this initiative because we know that challenging your brain with new activities is one of the many ways to help reduce the risk of dementia,” said Steph Ouellet, CEO of the Alzheimer Society, Southwest Partners. “These kits not only help individuals living with dementia keep their brains active but also create essential connections between these individuals and those participating with them.”
Healthy Brain Kits are available as a special collection to borrow with your Elgin County Library card. Place a hold for pickup or call your local Elgin County Library branch for more details.
