Kirtley Jarvis - "Dotted Line"
Running in conjunction with the signature quilt display, the Museum is hosting a complementary exhibit, called “Kirtley Jarvis: Dotted Line.” Kirtley Jarvis is the Museum’s 2009 Artist-in-Residence and has created mixed media work in response to her year-long experience immersed in the people, places and events represented by the collections at the Elgin County Museum.
“I am especially interested in rural women’s artistic textile traditions,” says Jarvis, “and how often these remnants are the only reminder of now vanished churches, congregations, schools and community groups.”
Using artifacts and archival material from Elgin County as a springboard, Jarvis interprets quilt traditions by interweaving local names, familiar words and historic photos to create embroidered and photographic collages.
She says she hopes to inspire connection and memory with her artful reconstruction of the community’s past.
