Duncombe Days, Sparta
In 1837 William Lyon Mackenzie launched an ill-fated revolt in Toronto; in Elgin County reform was led by Charles Duncombe, a popular and respected physician. Recently a play was performed in Sparta, ON detailing Duncombe's citizen army, and his escape after the army disbanded. The play was just one part of an entire weekend of related activities, that included performances of Colonel Talbot's famous speech, and a dinner at the United Church.
