Grab and Go Kids' Reads

Elgin County Library launches its Grab & Go Kids’ Reads literacy project
Helping busy families find time to read together

On July 12, 2010, Elgin County Library will launch the Grab and Go Kids’ Reads pilot project at its branches in Port Stanley, Aylmer, Springfield and Dutton to promote literacy, and encourage reading and library usage by busy families with young children.

BackpacksForty colourful backpacks will be available for a quick and convenient checkout of seven engaging children’s picture books for the whole family to enjoy. Green, blue and pink backpacks are filled with books chosen by qualified librarians, located near the circulation desk, and ready for busy families to Grab & Go!

“This program gives busy parents an opportunity to share a love of reading together and build their child’s language skills,” explains Brian Masschaele, Director of Community and Cultural Services of Elgin County. “It also encourages families to read more by offering a variety of books to discover.”

Every backpack has a different selection of books from 265 titles; that’s one new book to read for almost every day of the year! By selecting a backpack, families can spend more time reading together instead of searching for books. They can also track what they borrow with a number on each backpack, a list of book titles, and a green Grab & Go sticker on each book. A comment card is also available to tell us how much you enjoyed the books, backpacks and program. As a backpack makes it easy to transport books, check one out before your next family trip!

“The backpacks are wonderful surprises for parents to open with their children,” says Christina Mayhew, Aylmer Library Supervisor. “And their children can learn a love for books and enjoy the gift of reading for a better chance at success in school and life.”

The Grab and Go Kids’ Reads pilot project was made possible thanks to a grant received through Southern Ontario Library Service from the $15 million investment in public libraries by the Ontario Ministry of Culture.

Elgin County Library provides access to various materials, programs, services and an environment to support individual enrichment, foster literacy, encourage lifelong learning, and improve the quality of life of citizens in all communities of Elgin County.
