Aylmer

The Aylmer Branch is the largest branch library it is also one of the oldest libraries in the county being formed in 1874. The Aylmer Branch joined the Elgin County Library Association in 1940.

In the 1970s there was a push to include local history collections in the Elgin County Library.  The Aylmer Branch had an extensive local history collection and even included recognizable patrons such as the History Corner.  There is a picture of the History Corner in the column on the right showing library patrons Marshall McKnight, Fred Lindsay, and Giles Hume, with library staff Stella Chalk and Librarian Elinor Given.

The Aylmer Branch was located in the Carnegie Library building from 1912 to 1982.  This was a beautifully built library at 62 Centre Street.  The library needed more space in the late 1970’s so there was a push to renovate Old Town Hall.  The newly renovated Old Town Hall was open on June 7th, 1982 with the library being located on the main floor.
