Interlibrary Loan Service Update

The Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) provides free delivery of interlibrary loan materials to 153 public libraries in Southern Ontario and the Toronto Public Library. Barbara Franchetto, the CEO of SOLS, recently announced the following:

On Thursday April 11th, the 2019 Ontario Budget was tabled in the provincial legislature. On Friday April 12th, I was informed by the Ministry that the SOLS budget would be reduced by just over 50%. This is a substantial cut which must be absorbed in the current 2019-20, fiscal year. Valued services will have to be eliminated. I have since learned that Ontario Library Service-North is also facing a 50% budget cut and will also have to eliminate valued services.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform public libraries in southern Ontario that the SOLS interlibrary loan delivery service will permanently cease to operate, effective April 26th, 2019. I know this is very sad and disappointing news but given the enormity of the cut to our operating budget, there is no alternative. Even under our previous budget allocation, it was becoming difficult to sustain the service because of ever increasing operating costs.

Effective immediately, requests to borrow items from other library systems (also known as interlibrary loans) have been suspended and new requests will not be accepted at this time.

Please be assured that Elgin County Library’s internal delivery service is not affected and we will continue to ship materials between our branches.
