The Food for Fines program is an opportunity to work together with our communities to give back. Between November 19th and December 15th stop by any one of our branches to donate food or hygiene items. As a thank-you, the Elgin County Library will reduce overdue fines that may have accumulated on your account by $2 per item donated. All of the items are delivered to local food drives and benefit those in need in our communities. The program has been on-going annually for several years, and each year our community partners are extremely grateful for the support.
What items are eligible?
Any non-perishable food item can be used towards the donation. In addition new items such as toothpaste, soap and feminine hygiene items are always greatly appreciated.
What if I don’t have overdue fines?
Anyone can donate items to the branch regardless of whether or not your account has fines. The reduction, however, is only available during the time of the program and cannot be saved for a rainy day. Our communities members appreciate these donations.
Can I use the $2 per item for damaged or lost items?
The program only applies to fees that may have occurred on late items. Patrons are responsible for the replacement costs of lost or damaged items.
