Port Bruce Bridge Collapse

CENTRAL ELGIN – On February 23, 2018 shortly before 1:00 p.m. the bridge on Imperial Road leading into Port Bruce collapsed. A dump truck carrying a load of gravel was travelling north across the bridge at this time. There were no injuries involved.

The County of Elgin is now gathering more information as to why and how this collapse occurred and will be engaging the services of engineering experts to investigate causal factors involved.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation as to why this collapse occurred,” said County Warden David Marr. “The safety of our infrastructure is of paramount importance to County Council. It was fortunate that the truck driver was not harmed and we greatly appreciate the role that the O.P.P., EMS, firefighters, and municipal roads crews have played in securing the scene and managing the situation.

The Port Bruce Bridge is closed and will remain so for the time being. The O.P.P. has closed Imperial Road (County Road 73) between Rush Creek and Dexter Lines and detour routes have been put in place.

The County of Elgin urges members of the public to stay away from the bridge structure and to exercise extreme caution around fast moving water.
