County Council Highlights - Nov. 28, 2017

Library Projects, Programs and Partnerships

The Elgin County Library provided an update on its projects, programs and partnerships over the past six months. Some highlights of the presentation included:

• The Books 2 Go program that reaches homebound patrons in the western portion of the County will be extending its reach to the eastern parts of the County in December. This is possible because of a partnership with the Victorian Order of Nurses.
• The Growing with Books program is a partnership with Elgin St. Thomas Public Health that provides parents of newborns with parenting resources including Baby’s First Library Card.
• E-Waste Recycling Bins located at several Elgin County Library branches have taken in 1,500lbs of electronic waste in just two weeks’ time benefiting programs at the STEAM Centre in St. Thomas.
• The TD Summer Reading Club was a success with 974 children registered and 75 programs offered.

Tree Commissioner/Weed Inspector Annual Report

The Elgin County Tree Commissioner/ Weed Inspector provided a summary of activity related to the Elgin Woodlands Conservation
By-Law for the period of November 1, 2016 to October 31, 2017 and weed inspection activity for the 2017 season. The report included information regarding logging activity, applications for woodland clearings, and weed complaints.

Land Division Committee Year End Report

The Elgin County Land Division Committee presented its year end report to County Council. The report detailed the number of severances dealth with by the Committee between November 1, 2016 and October 31, 2017.

Council Discusses Deputy Warden Position

At its meeting held on November 28, 2017 Elgin County Council discussed the introduction of a Deputy Warden position to provide stability, continuity and general governance improvements. Discussions regarding how this deputy would be selected and what roles would be associated with the position are ongoing.
